Pendleton Upholstered Headboards

I thought a quick google would reveal easy plans for this idea, but I could not find a single reference! As we are renting the cabin, I knew the Pendleton flair would need to appear in a non-blanket capacity.

I started by drawing up plans. We did two versions, one is for the main room and framed in wood with floating nightstands. The other is all upholstered and has a floating shelf above it for storage and lighting (as it sits in a nook).

The illustrator mock ups are shown side by side:

For the wood nightstand version we used 1x4s to build the frame that will hold the upholstered piece and the nightstands/lights. Shown is the back, we are mounting the cabinet grade plywood for the facade pieces (one on each side) with wood glue and screws. There are two horizontal supports on the back to hold the nightstands.

Make sure to countersink the hardware and reinforce with wood glue. We use 1.5" wood screws.

Standing upright in this photo. We are applying the glue to the bottom facade piece (we screwed it in from the back too).

Added 1x3" trim around the edges in hemlock, added the wood boxes for the nightstand shelves (just 1x8" mitred and screwed in from the back. We painted and added a diagonal support to keep it straight. We cleated it to the log wall.

Then we installed the upholstered portion and we added electrical outlets to the nightstand boxes. See below for how to upholster the plywood.

The second upholstered headboard is all one piece, so the methods for the insert above are the same but here the frame itself does all the work. For the wood, we measured wall to wall with 1" set back for the foam to wrap around it. I cut an eggcrate mattress pad to size and wrapped it in 1" upholstery foam. You can see the cleats at the top. We cut the 45˚ and used the other half to mount to the studs on the wall.

  1. Thanks for taking the time to discuss that, I feel strongly about this and so really like getting to know more on this kind of field. Do you mind updating your blog post with additional insight? It should be really useful for all of us.
